What is the Difference between Climacteric and Menopause?

Written by Adam Ryan - January 07, 2023

Climacteric and menopause are two terms that have often been used interchangeably, but they are actually quite different.

Climacteric: Climacteric is a natural transitional period of time for women in which hormonal production gradually declines, leading to changes in the body such as hot flashes, night sweats, irregular periods, insomnia, vaginal dryness and an increase in other physical symptoms. This transition typically begins during a woman's mid-to-late 40s and continues until she reaches menopause.

Menopause: Menopause is when a woman experiences her last menstrual period and enters her postmenopausal period. The average age for menopause ranges between 45-55 years old. At this point, a woman no longer produces eggs and can no longer become pregnant naturally.

The main difference between climacteric and menopause is that climacteric occurs before menopause while menopause marks the end of hormonal production altogether. During climacteric, hormones levels begin to wane over time while at menopause they stop producing altogether. As such, during climacteric a woman may continue to get her period while at menopause she will not experience it anymore. Another difference between climacteric and menopause is that during the former symptoms such as hot flashes or mood swings may be present while after getting through the transition stage into menopausal these symptoms go away completely.

In summary:

  • Climacteric occurs before menopause as hormones levels begin to wane over time making it a transitional period from reproductive years to non-reproductive years; during this stage a woman may still continue to get her period
  • Menopause marks the end of hormonal production altogether-- something that can happen naturally or due to medical interventions; once through this stage symptoms related to hormone imbalance such as hot flashes or mood swings dissolve completely
