At What Age Does Menopause Usually End?

Written by Adam Ryan - February 28, 2023

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. It typically occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being 51. However, menopause can occur earlier or later depending on the individual.

The process of menopause begins when your ovaries stop releasing eggs each month, which is known as amenorrhea. This usually happens over a period of several months to three years or more and is known as perimenopause. During this time, it isn't uncommon for women to experience symptoms such as hot flashes and mood changes. The final stage of menopause is known as postmenopause, which is when your periods have ceased for 12 consecutive months or longer.

Once you enter premenopause, your hormones (estrogen and progesterone) start to decline gradually until they reach very low levels at postmenopause. Your hormone levels will continue to remain low after postmenopause ends which will cause you to no longer experience menstrual cycles or be able to become pregnant.

It's important for women to understand that menopausal symptoms can appear months or even years before their last period arrives and that these symptoms can continue during postmenopausal stages for some women for up to 10 years or more afterwards. Some common symptoms include: hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, irregular period cycles, mood swings and sleep disturbances.

Although there are many products available over-the-counter (OTC) medication that can help relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings; Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) administered by a healthcare professional may be necessary if these OTC remedies don't provide enough relief from your symptoms. HRT works by providing hormones that replace those lost during menopause in order to reduce or eliminate its associated symptoms so that you can feel better throughout this difficult time in your life. In conclusion, the age at which most women go through menopause is between the ages of 45-55 with an average age of 51 although some may experience it earlier or later than this depending on the individual. It's important for women going through menopause
