What is Menopause?

Written by Thomas Myers - February 02, 2023

Menopause marks the permanent end of fertility for women, signifying the cessation of menstrual periods. It typically occurs in a woman's late 40s or early 50s, and denotes a natural biological transition as her reproductive system begins to age.

The physical symptoms associated with menopause can be quite varied, but may include hot flashes or night sweats, insomnia or sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness, headaches, joint pain or stiffness, changes in libido and/or decreased sexual pleasure and sensitivity.

The Science Behind Menopause

Menopause is an evolutionarily-designed process that occurs when a woman’s body stops producing eggs due to the diminishing levels of estrogen and other hormones. This happens because there are fewer follicles—or potential egg-bearing chambers—left in the ovaries. When these follicles run out completely, a woman’s period ends permanently.

The average age at which most women experience menopausal symptoms is 51 years old; however this can vary from person to person depending on lifestyle factors like nutrition and exercise as well as genetic predispositions.

Emotional Factors Surrounding Menopause

Often times women may feel deep sadness surrounding life transitions such as menopause as it marks an end to female fertility. Other emotions such as fear of aging or anxiety can also present during this time due to fluctuations in hormone levels that cause physical changes like weight gain, hair loss or wrinkles around the eyes and mouth area.

Women may also struggle with feelings of low self-esteem if they feel their body is “failing” them during this time. It's important to remember that menopause isn't something you need to battle alone — it's a normal part of life as our bodies go through natural changes over time. Seeking help from mental health professionals such as psychologists or counselors if needed in order to better cope with any emotional changes is highly recommended for those struggling with their changing bodies.

Supportive Strategies During Menopause

Though menopause can bring about difficult physical and emotional changes for some individuals, there are ways you can support yourself through this transition in your life! Here are just a few tips:

  • Eat foods high in fiber and phytoestrogens (plant-based compounds) such as soy products like edamame or tempeh which may help reduce hot flashes by providing a source of natural estrogen

Exercise regularly – not only will it help maintain your energy levels but it can relax tense muscles while increasing blood flow which may help regulate mood swings

Reduce caffeine intake – Caffeine has been linked to worsening hot flashes so consider reducing your consumption especially close before bedtime when night sweats may be more likely

Sleep more – Getting proper rest helps restore balance in the body so aim for 7-8 hours each day if possible

Try relaxation techniques like gentle yoga, meditation or deep breathing exercises which have all been known to reduce stress levels

Consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – This medical treatment replaces estrogen lost during menopausal transition with synthetic estrogen supplements which often alleviate physical symptoms
